Cleansing spaces with smoke

Smoke cleansing, also sometimes called smudging, is a practice used in many cultures to clear negativity and purify a space. Here's a guide on how to cleanse your space using a smoke wand:

Before You Begin:

  • Choose your smoke wand: White sage is a popular choice, but other herbs like lavender, cedar, eucalyptus or pine can also be used. Consider your intention when selecting your herb.

  • Open windows and doors: This allows stale energy to escape and creates good airflow to prevent smoke build-up.

  • Prepare a fireproof container: A ceramic bowl, cauldron or abalone shell will work well.

Cleansing Process:

  1. Light the wand: Light the tip of your smoke wand with a match or lighter. Let it burn for a moment, then gently blow out the flame. You should see a gentle smoke rising.

  2. Set your intention: Silently focus on your purpose for cleansing the space. You might be clearing negativity after an argument, inviting positive energy before a gathering, or simply promoting a sense of peace.

  3. Cleanse the space: Begin at a doorway or window and slowly walk around the perimeter of the space, wafting the smoke into corners, along walls, and up towards the ceiling. Pay attention to areas that feel heavy or stagnant.

  4. Visualize: As the smoke fills the space, imagine it carrying away any negativity or unwanted energy.

  5. Extinguish the wand: When finished, gently press the smoking end of the wand into your fireproof container to extinguish it.

Additional Tips:

  • Use your intuition: Trust your gut feeling when it comes to how long to cleanse each area.

  • Respect: If you're new to smoke cleansing, it's important to learn about the cultural origins of the practice.
